Changeable light under scattered cloud, with a light chop building from the W and the barometer holding steady. The productive water at Davis Lake will be around bays that hold the day's warmth. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient.

Davis Lake falls in Thunder Bay District, part of Ontario. It sits at 335 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 53 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Some 5.2 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Manitouwadge sits 19 km from the bank. Further out sit Hornepayne (66 km) and Longlac (85 km). Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Fish documented in Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. The county list is broader than any single water. Davis Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Climate normals give 16°C for July and -18°C for January. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. On Davis Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. For a change of water, Jim Lake is 1.9 km distant. Check the position on Davis Lake before loading the car.
