Rain moving through today, with a light chop building from the W with the glass holding level. Activity on Daer Lake should centre on the seam between weed and open water. A tough forecast; the morning offers the only real chance. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Sudbury, Daer Lake is an Ontario water. Northern bush runs right down to the water. About 3 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. On size it sits at the modest end of our Sudbury list. Chapleau is the closest place, 21 km off. Greater Sudbury sits 218 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Near neighbours: Pole Lake 2 km, Lackner Lake about 2.4 km, Longwell Lake 2.6 km, Hebden Lake about 3.1 km and Lackner Creek 4.1 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Across Sudbury, recorded fish include smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Work Daer Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
On the long-term average, July reads 17°C and January reads -16°C. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Climate figures give an open season running late April to mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Daer Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Pole Lake, 2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat Daer Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
