Drifting cloud with clear gaps tonight, with a consistent blow out of the NW with the glass holding level. Crest Lake should fish best around shallow cover and weed edges today. The numbers single out the morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Crest Lake falls in Nipissing District, part of Ontario. The ground around here is lake country bush. With some 15 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The edge runs 2.7 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Nearest place of any size is Markstay-Warren, 55 km away. Beyond it, Capreol at 60 km and West Nipissing at 65 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Records held for Nipissing District cover smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch, pumpkinseed and rock bass. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. The near bank of Crest Lake is often the one people ignore.
Climate records put July near 18°C and January near -15°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near late November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Expect Crest Lake to follow that timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Gull Lake at 1.5 km is the sensible second choice. Signs at Crest Lake carry more weight than any list.
