Rain on and off through the day, with just enough W wind to ripple the surface and steady pressure. Start the search at Chene Lake along sheltered bays and points. Expect the better fishing from afternoon into evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Ontario holds Chene Lake, in Sudbury. Height above sea level is 437 metres. It runs to roughly 84 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Shoreline length is close to 8.2 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Chapleau is the closest place, 48 km off. Elliot Lake follows at 124 km, then Wawa at 134 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. On Chene Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Temperature averages peak at 17°C in July and bottom out at -15°C in January. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Chene Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access points are not mapped for this water, which suits people who like quiet. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Should this one be busy, Weshaygo Lake is 4 km off.
