A cloudless sky and strong light today, with just enough WNW wind to ripple the surface with the glass holding level. Activity on Burnfield Lake should centre on the calm side of the wind. The strongest window is the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

The Algoma end of Ontario holds Burnfield Lake. Everything around it is northern bush. It measures some 1.04 sq km, and wind has room to build across it. Around 6.6 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. On our Algoma list it sits near the top for size. For a base, Wawa sits 44 km out. Hornepayne is 98 km away, with Manitouwadge at 104 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Algoma records list walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Burnfield Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Climate normals give 16°C for July and -17°C for January. The season is measured in weeks rather than months. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The lid tends to go about early May and return around mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Anyone fishing Burnfield Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Failing this one, try Cotton Lake, 1.3 km away. None of that is settled for Burnfield Lake in what we hold.
