Glare on the water under a clear sky, with enough SSE wind to stack food downwind and no real change in pressure. Expect most activity at Burd Lake around any hard bottom among the soft. The day holds up well from the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Set in Sudbury, Ontario, this is Burd Lake. The water sits 385 metres up. Around 79 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. With 11 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Elliot Lake at 47 km is the nearest place to stop. Espanola lies 54 km off, Dowling another 64 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Open biodiversity records for Sudbury list smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of Burd Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -13°C in January. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Burd Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Little Long Lake, 4.1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Burd Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
