Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with a light W breeze with the barometer flat. Start the search at Alces Lake along the weed line and any gaps in it. The day holds up well from afternoon into evening. Let the water tell you when to move. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Alces Lake is one of the Sudbury waters in Ontario. It lies 433 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 62 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Some 5.8 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. It sits higher than most water we list in Ontario. Elliot Lake sits 56 km from here and is the nearest stop. Further out sit Espanola (62 km) and Dowling (64 km). No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Our records hold no depth for this water. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Sudbury cover smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. On Alces Lake that means starting tight and working out.
The year swings from about -14°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about late November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Alces Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Should this one be busy, Surveyor Lake is 2.9 km off.
