Sunshine start to finish today, with an easy breeze from the W and steady pressure. Give the calm side of the wind the first hour at Boulder Lake. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Boulder Lake is set in Sudbury, Ontario. It sits at 211 metres above sea level. With some 12 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The edge runs 3.2 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Our Sudbury list holds plenty of bigger water. Start from Markstay-Warren, 23 km down the road. It is 36 km to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Open biodiversity records for Sudbury list smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. At Boulder Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Climate records put July near 19°C and January near -12°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near early December. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. On Boulder Lake that shapes the whole year.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Big Marsh Lake sits 1.6 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position on Boulder Lake before loading the car.
