Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with a soft S wind and pressure going nowhere. Give bays that hold the day's warmth the first hour at Black Lake. The numbers single out the morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Black Lake is one of the Algoma waters in Ontario. It stands 341 metres above sea level. Around 57 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Shoreline comes to about 4.1 km, small enough to learn in a day. Elliot Lake sits 42 km from here and is the nearest stop. Greater Sudbury is the closest city, 157 km away. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Algoma include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. At Black Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Averages move between -12°C in January and 18°C in July. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Plan around that when you fish Black Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Sort the permit out before you load the car. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Portage Lake at 1.8 km is the sensible second choice. Nothing on Black Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
