A half-covered sky tonight, with almost no wind to speak of and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Black Lake should be near the calm side of the wind. The day holds up well from afternoon into evening. Let the water tell you when to move. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

You will find Black Lake in Algoma, Ontario. The country round it is rolling bush from end to end. It runs to roughly 15 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. With about 1.7 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. It lies lower than most water we list in Ontario. The closest town, Blind River, is 12 km distant. Further out sit Elliot Lake (22 km) and Thessalon (53 km). The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Algoma include walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Take Black Lake a stretch at a time.
Expect July to average close to 19°C, with January the cold end at about -11°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid April. Climate figures give an open season running mid April to early December. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. It holds true on Black Lake more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Granary Lake at 2.8 km is the sensible second choice. What applies at Black Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
