Solid cloud cover today, with a soft W wind with the glass holding level. Give the seam between weed and open water the first hour at Big Lake. The forecast backs the stretch from afternoon into evening. Settle in and let the day develop. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Big Lake is an Algoma water, in Ontario. It lies 360 metres above sea level. At 1.29 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. You are looking at roughly 19 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. On our Algoma list it sits near the top for size. Elliot Lake lies 31 km from the water. For a city, Greater Sudbury is 152 km off. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Algoma include walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Big Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Between January at about -12°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near late November in autumn. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Plan any trip to Big Lake around it.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Windy Lake, 1.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm access to Big Lake locally before you travel.
