A bright day with hardly any cloud, with a soft W wind with the glass holding level. Activity on Bar Lake should centre on points where shallow meets deep. A tough forecast; the middle of the day offers the only real chance. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Bar Lake is one of the Algoma waters in Ontario. Beyond the shoreline you have taiga. At about 11 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. About 1.9 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Our Algoma list holds plenty of bigger water. Chapleau lies 62 km from the water. Further out sit Wawa (104 km) and Hornepayne (130 km). Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Fish documented in Algoma include walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Bar Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
The year swings from about -17°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Expect Bar Lake to follow that timing.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Calais Lake sits 1.4 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position on Bar Lake before loading the car.
