A crisp, open sky after dark, with enough WNW wind to stack food downwind and pressure going nowhere. The productive water at Baird Lake will be around the shaded margin through bright spells. The useful hours run the day. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

You will find Baird Lake in Rainy River District, Ontario. The water sits 405 metres up. At about 74 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. There is roughly 12 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. Atikokan sits 40 km from the bank. Ely is 68 km and Babbitt 89 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records held for Rainy River District cover northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Anyone new to Baird Lake should walk it once before setting up.
The warm month here averages 18°C; the cold one sits at -16°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Plan around that when you fish Baird Lake.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. The nearest alternative is Metacryst Lake, 2.4 km out. For Baird Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
