Blue sky from bank to bank today, with a stiffish breeze from the WNW and pressure sitting still. Most of the action on Armstrong Lake should come off the seam between weed and open water. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Armstrong Lake is a Greater Sudbury water, in Ontario. The water sits 352 metres up. About 2.71 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. You are looking at roughly 24 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. It is among the larger waters listed here for Greater Sudbury. The nearest place of any size is Dowling, 19 km away. Beyond it, Rayside-Balfour at 29 km and Espanola at 34 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Open biodiversity records for Greater Sudbury list smallmouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike and pumpkinseed. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. The near bank of Armstrong Lake is often the one people ignore.
The range across the year is -14°C to 18°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about late November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. The season on Armstrong Lake follows the weather closely.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Whitefish Lake at 1 km is the nearest alternative. Confirm access to Armstrong Lake locally before you travel.
