A closed sky with even light today, with a light chop building from the W and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in North Brook Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. The forecast is against you; the evening is the least bad option. Save the long walk for a better forecast.

The Guysborough County end of Nova Scotia holds North Brook Lake. The shore lies 9.4 km out. Surface area runs to about 8 hectares — small enough to read in one session. Nearest place of any size is Stellarton, 65 km away. Beyond it, New Glasgow at 67 km and Antigonish at 68 km. Within a short drive: Bear Lake 1.6 km off, Kindervater Lake (1.9 km), Smith Lake 2.1 km off, Bull Moose Lake (2.9 km) and Second Lake 4.1 km off. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Species logged across Guysborough County include alewife, American eel, brook trout and Atlantic salmon. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. North Brook Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Averages move between -6°C in February and 18°C in August. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around mid April. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near late December. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. North Brook Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Bear Lake is 1.6 km off. Rules at North Brook Lake are worth checking on the day.
