Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a whisper of wind from the SW and steady pressure. Give the first drop-off and weed lines the first hour at Kindervater Lake. The day fishes best from afternoon into evening. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Look for Kindervater Lake in the Guysborough County part of Nova Scotia. Beyond the shoreline you have mixed forest. At about 19 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. With about 1.9 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Stellarton at 64 km is the nearest place to stop. New Glasgow is 66 km and Westville 66 km. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Fish documented in Guysborough County include alewife, American eel, brook trout and Atlantic salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Work Kindervater Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Expect August to average close to 18°C, with February the cold end at about -6°C. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around mid April. Open water usually runs from mid April until about late December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Kindervater Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Bear Lake, 1.6 km away. What applies at Kindervater Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
