An even grey lid over the water, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Mud Lake should be near bays that hold the day's warmth. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies.

Within Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, you have Mud Lake. It sits in mixed forest country. It covers about 3 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. Ground here is low by Nova Scotia standards. The nearest town is Amherst, 6.8 km away. Beyond it, Tidnish at 16 km and Sackville at 18 km. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Our records hold no depth for this water. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Cumberland County, recorded fish include Atlantic salmon, brook trout, striped bass and rainbow smelt. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Anyone new to Mud Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Climate records put July near 18°C and January near -8°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Look for the thaw near mid April; the fishing lifts straight after. Open water usually runs from mid April until about mid December. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Mud Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. McKims Hole sits 0.5 km off and takes the overflow. Treat Mud Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
