A grey, even sky over the water, with an easy breeze from the SSW with the glass holding level. Whatever swims in Round Lake should be near sheltered bays and points. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Round Lake is a Cumberland County water, in Nova Scotia. Height above sea level is 3 metres. Around 82 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The bank runs about 4.3 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. It ranks high for size among our Cumberland County listings. Start from Amherst, 11 km down the road. Beyond it, Tidnish at 13 km and Sackville at 17 km. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Cumberland County include Atlantic salmon, brook trout, striped bass, rainbow smelt and American eel. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Work Round Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Seasonal averages run from -8°C in January up to 18°C in July. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Count the season from break-up, usually mid April. Open water usually runs from mid April until about mid December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. It holds true on Round Lake more years than not.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Rush Lake at 2 km is the sensible second choice. Treat access at Round Lake as something to verify.
