Soft grey light all day today, with just enough WSW wind to ripple the surface and no real change in pressure. Expect most activity at MacDonald Lake around any hard bottom among the soft. The productive run goes afternoon into evening. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Look for MacDonald Lake in the Guysborough County part of Nova Scotia. The country here is pine and birch. Around 17 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The bank runs about 2.2 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. The closest town, Stellarton, is 40 km distant. For a city, Dartmouth is 103 km off. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Fish documented in Guysborough County include alewife, American eel, brook trout and Atlantic salmon. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. At MacDonald Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Seasonal averages run from -7°C in January up to 18°C in August. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. From about late April to around mid December, expect open water on the long-run figures. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Plan any trip to MacDonald Lake around it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. The nearest alternative is Princess Pine Lake, 1.1 km out. Nothing here settles the position at MacDonald Lake for certain.
