A grey, even sky over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the W with the barometer flat. The productive water at First Branch Lake will be around the calm side of the wind. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

The Annapolis County end of Nova Scotia holds First Branch Lake. Salt water lies 30 km off. It measures about 61 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. With 7.3 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. On our Annapolis County list it sits near the top for size. Nearest place of any size is Digby, 41 km away. Halifax sits 133 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Annapolis County cover alewife, Atlantic salmon, chain pickerel and yellow perch. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On First Branch Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -6°C. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid April. The season between ice runs from about mid April to mid December. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. On First Branch Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Rocky Lake, 2.3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm before you fish First Branch Lake.
