No direct sun expected today, with a kind WSW breeze on the water and no real change in pressure. Give points where shallow meets deep the first hour at Deerland Lake. Everything points to the middle of the day. Give the likely spots time before moving. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Annapolis County, Deerland Lake is a Nova Scotia water. Salt water lies 34 km off. Small at around 4 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Annapolis County list. Middleton is the closest town at 27 km. The big place round here is Dartmouth, 112 km distant. Also within reach: Skunk Lake at 1.1 km, Bezant Lake at about 1.5 km, Cliff Lake at 2.6 km, Stoddart Lake at about 2.7 km and Waterloo Lake at 2.8 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Annapolis County include alewife, Atlantic salmon, chain pickerel, yellow perch and blueback herring. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Fish Deerland Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -6°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid April. The open-water window runs from around mid April to about mid December in an average year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Time your trip to Deerland Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Skunk Lake sits 1.1 km off and takes the overflow. For Deerland Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
