Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a soft SE wind and pressure sitting still. The water to cover at Preg Lake is structure within a cast of the bank. The day fishes best from the day. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. The cold puts a premium on the calmest, deepest water.

Northwest Territories holds Preg Lake, in North Slave Region. This is dry rangeland country. At about 15 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Bank access stretches around 2.7 km in total. Our North Slave Region list holds plenty of bigger water. Yellowknife at 15 km is the nearest place to stop. The nearest city of size is Edmonton, 991 km away. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name Arctic grayling, lake trout and slimy sculpin. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Preg Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -26°C. The fishing year opens late and shuts early. Once it clears, about late May, the fishing comes on quickly. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late May until roughly late October. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. On Preg Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Failing this one, try Creek Lake, 4 km away. Check the position at Preg Lake before loading the car.
