A crisp, open sky after dark, with stillness over the whole water with a settled glass. Expect most activity at Cotters Pond around margins first, middle later. The strongest window runs from night into morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Cotters Pond falls in Old Perlican, part of Newfoundland and Labrador. It stands 96 metres above sea level. About 5 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Pouch Cove is the closest town at 36 km. The big place round here is St. John's, 58 km distant. Within a short drive: Middle Pond 1.9 km off, Rocky Pond just 2.3 km, Bell Pond 2.4 km off, Little Pond just 3.2 km and Besom Cove Pond 3.5 km off. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
Our records hold no depth for this water. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Public occurrence data for Old Perlican names Atlantic cod, polar cod, capelin and bull-rout. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Cotters Pond the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The range across the year is -5°C to 16°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near mid December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Cotters Pond fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. For a change of water, Middle Pond is 1.9 km distant. The position on Cotters Pond is worth confirming on the day.
