A crisp, open sky after dark, with a helpful ripple pushed from the NE and no real change in pressure. Activity on Wye Lake should centre on structure within a cast of the bank. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Wye Lake lies in Capital Regional District, in British Columbia. The surroundings are farm and woodlot. The water covers some 14 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. A shoreline of some 4.8 km keeps the choices simple. Start from Sooke, 28 km down the road. Then East Sooke, 31 km, and Shawnigan Lake, 32 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records held for Capital Regional District cover Chinook salmon, Coho salmon and Chum salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Wye Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Average temperature peaks around 14°C in August and bottoms out near 1°C in December. A lid forms in a hard winter only. In a normal year the cover is thin and short-lived. November and March are the quiet, comfortable months to be out. Expect Wye Lake to follow that timing. Wind on the bank for a day or two lifts the fishing there.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is a campsite 1.2 km from the water. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. For a change of water, Forslund Lake is 13 km distant. Check the position on Wye Lake before loading the car.
