No direct sun expected today, with just enough NE wind to ripple the surface with a settled glass. Give the shaded margin through bright spells the first hour at Summit Lake. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. A properly cold day, so expect slow, deliberate fishing.

Summit Lake is one of the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District listings for British Columbia. It sits at 1,500 metres above sea level. Around 12 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. A shoreline of some 1.9 km keeps the choices simple. It is high ground by British Columbia standards. The town to know is Golden, 33 km out. It is 190 km to Calgary, the nearest city. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Columbia-Shuswap Regional District records list sockeye salmon, Coho salmon, bull trout, brook trout and rainbow trout among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. The shape of Summit Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Long-run averages give August about 14°C and January about -10°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. The open-water window runs from around late April to about mid November in an average year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Summit Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. You can camp 130 m off, which suits an early start. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Should this one be busy, Three Island Lake is 2.2 km off. Check the current arrangement for Summit Lake.
