Solid cloud cover today, with calm air over the water and pressure sitting still. Fish at Steer Lake should hold close to any hard bottom among the soft. A tough forecast; the night offers the only real chance. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Steer Lake stands in Thompson-Nicola Regional District, British Columbia. The bank is 1,410 metres above sea level. Small at around 9 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. You are 38 km from Peachland. After that come Glenrosa at 39 km and Smith Creek at 42 km. Close neighbours run: Neveu Lake out at 1 km, Pattinson Lake (2.9 km), Pennask Lake out at 3 km, Pefferle Lake (3.1 km) and Little Pennask Lake out at 5.6 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Fish documented in Thompson-Nicola Regional District include Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon, Coho salmon, rainbow trout and pink salmon. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Steer Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Climate records put August near 13°C and December near -8°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. The lid tends to go about late April and return around mid November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. It sets the rhythm of the year at Steer Lake.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Neveu Lake at 1 km is the nearest alternative. Signs at Steer Lake carry more weight than any list.
