Silt Lake, British Columbia: Fishing Spots and Seasons

• Overview

  Stikine Region in British Columbia is where Silt Lake sits. The country here is spruce and muskeg. It measures about 14 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The edge runs 1.9 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. On size it sits at the modest end of our Stikine Region list. Skagway sits 53 km from here and is the nearest stop. Then Haines, 76 km, and Whitehorse, 93 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.

• Where to Fish on Silt Lake

  No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Stikine Region: Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon and Coho salmon. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Fish Silt Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Between January at about -15°C and July at about 8°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The season is measured in weeks rather than months. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early June. From about early June to around mid October, expect open water on the long-run figures. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Silt Lake fishes to that pattern most years.

• Tackle & Baits

  The access position is unclear from public sources. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Partridge Lake at 18 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm before you fish Silt Lake.
