A clear night sky over the water, with air barely moving with the glass holding level. Shere Lake should fish best around structure within a cast of the bank today. The evening is where the day comes good. Change depth before you change anything else. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Shere Lake sits within Regional District of Fraser-Fort George in British Columbia. The surface lies 764 metres up. About 7 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. On size it sits at the modest end of our Regional District of Fraser-Fort George list. Start from Valemount, 32 km down the road. After that come Grande Cache at 99 km and Jasper at 104 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon, mountain whitefish and rainbow trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Treat Shere Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
The range across the year is -8°C to 15°C. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. After early April the shallows warm and the fish move up. From about early April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. That is the shape of the year on Shere Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. There is camping recorded roughly 200 m off. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Russellmeadow Lake, 12 km away, makes the obvious fallback.
