Blue sky from bank to bank today, with light air out of the NNE with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Sheilds Lake around the seam between weed and open water. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Sheilds Lake is a Capital Regional District water, British Columbia side. Salt water lies 12 km off. Surface area is around 16 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The bank runs about 2.6 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. East Sooke is the closest place, 9.2 km off. Sooke is 9.5 km away, with Langford at 12 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Survey and observation records for Capital Regional District include Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, Chum salmon, rainbow trout and sockeye salmon. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Sheilds Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Expect August near 16°C and January near 2°C on the long-run figures. In milder years the surface never sets. Cover comes and goes, so treat it with suspicion rather than trust. Autumn steadies things again once the heat lets go. Expect Sheilds Lake to follow that timing. A rising level after rain switches things on for a day or two.
We hold no note on access for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The water borders Sooke Mountain Provincial Park, so expect the reserve rules to apply. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Grass Lake at 1.2 km is the sensible second choice. For Sheilds Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
