Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with light air out of the ENE and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Ruault Lake should be near the shaded margin through bright spells. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Biting air and slow fish: small baits, long pauses.

Ruault Lake is a Regional District of East Kootenay water, British Columbia side. It lies 2,052 metres above sea level. About 8 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. By elevation it is in the upper part of our British Columbia listings. The nearest place of any size is Cranbrook, 37 km away. Calgary sits 173 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth figures are not published for this one. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Regional District of East Kootenay records list rainbow trout, mountain whitefish and sockeye salmon among the fish reported. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Ruault Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Climate normals give 11°C for August and -11°C for January. Winter shuts the surface down for months. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid May. Ice usually gives way near mid May, and forms again about early November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Ruault Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. For a change of water, Summer Lake is 4.2 km distant. Confirm access to Ruault Lake locally before you travel.
