Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with enough N wind to stack food downwind with the barometer flat. Start the search at Puntchesakut Lake along the calm side of the wind. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

British Columbia holds Puntchesakut Lake, in Cariboo Regional District. The country round it is pine and birch from end to end. At some 2.18 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. The edge covers about 7.5 km, enough to hold several distinct areas. On our Cariboo Regional District list it sits near the top for size. Nearest place of any size is Quesnel, 30 km away. Further out sit Prince George (105 km) and Williams Lake (108 km). No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Across Cariboo Regional District, recorded fish include sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon and bull trout. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Puntchesakut Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
The range across the year is -11°C to 14°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Climate averages put the opening at about mid April and the closing near mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. On Puntchesakut Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. The car has to stay 1.3 km away, which shapes how much tackle you bring. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Tiltzarone Lake sits 1.6 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position at Puntchesakut Lake before loading the car.
