A mixed sky through the night, with a light chop building from the NE and the barometer holding steady. Give the seam between weed and open water the first hour at McTavish Lake. A tough forecast; the night offers the only real chance. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

McTavish Lake belongs to Stikine Region, British Columbia. Height above sea level is 699 metres. With some 41 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Around 5.5 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. The town to know is Watson Lake, 18 km out. For a city, Edmonton is 1154 km off. Round about: Moose Pond some 1.1 km off, Mayfield Lake just 3.6 km, Stone Lake some 13 km off, Pickle Lake just 15 km and Blind Lake some 15 km off. This one is safely inside the county line.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Open biodiversity records for Stikine Region list Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon, Coho salmon, mountain whitefish and Arctic grayling. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Read McTavish Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
The year swings from about -24°C in January to roughly 15°C in July. The season is measured in weeks rather than months. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near early November: that is the shape of an average year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Plan around that when you fish McTavish Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. For a change of water, Moose Pond is 1.1 km distant. Confirm before you fish McTavish Lake.
