A grey, even sky over the water, with a light SW breeze with the barometer flat. Whatever swims in Idleback Lake should be near the margins and the shelf beyond them. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. A properly cold day, so expect slow, deliberate fishing.

Idleback Lake belongs to Regional District of Kootenay-Boundary, British Columbia. The surface lies 1,441 metres up. At about 13 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Shoreline comes to about 1.6 km, small enough to learn in a day. It is high ground by British Columbia standards. Supplies mean a trip to Penticton, 21 km off. The nearest city of size is Kelowna, 44 km away. This one is safely inside the county line.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, brook trout, longnose sucker and largescale sucker. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Idleback Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Expect August to average close to 14°C, with December the cold end at about -8°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Anyone fishing Idleback Lake regularly works to that calendar.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. A campsite is mapped about 220 m away, which makes an early start easier. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. If the gate is shut, Reed Lake at 10 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Idleback Lake in what we hold.
