Holstein Lake near Lumby: Fishing Spots, Seasons and Access

• Overview

  Holstein Lake sits in Regional District of North Okanagan, out in British Columbia. The bank is 1,514 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 11 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Roughly 1.5 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. By elevation it is in the upper part of our British Columbia listings. Lumby is the closest town at 22 km. The big place round here is Kelowna, 76 km distant. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.

• Where to Fish on Holstein Lake

  Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Reported across Regional District of North Okanagan: Coho salmon, sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon, rainbow trout and brook trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. The near bank of Holstein Lake is often the one people ignore.

• Seasonal Patterns

  August runs about 15°C on average, January about -6°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early April. The season between ice runs from about early April to late November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. The season on Holstein Lake follows the weather closely.

• Tackle & Baits

  The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows a campsite some 220 m from the water. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Clier Lake, 13 km away. Nothing on Holstein Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
