Wet weather working through today, with a whisper of wind from the NW and the barometer holding steady. On Hill Lake, work the shallows early and the drop later first. If you must go, go in the middle of the day. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Hill Lake lies in Cariboo Regional District, in British Columbia. It sits in rolling bush. Surface area is around 26 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The edge runs 2.2 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Quesnel at 28 km is the nearest place to stop. For a city, Kamloops is 270 km off. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Fish documented in Cariboo Regional District include sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon, bull trout and Coho salmon. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Hill Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
The year swings from about -9°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early April. Average temperatures cross freezing around early April in spring and again near late November in autumn. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Hill Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Blue Lake, 7.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Hill Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
