Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with hardly a ripple anywhere with the glass holding level. The fish at Hale Lake are likely to sit near bays that hold the day's warmth. A tough forecast; the night offers the only real chance. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

The Cariboo Regional District entry here is Hale Lake, in British Columbia. It lies 965 metres above sea level. Around 12 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The edge runs 1.6 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. On size it sits at the modest end of our Cariboo Regional District list. For a base, 108 Mile Ranch sits 18 km out. The big place round here is Kamloops, 153 km distant. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Across Cariboo Regional District, recorded fish include sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon, bull trout and Coho salmon. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Hale Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Climate normals give 15°C for July and -8°C for January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Once it clears, about early April, the fishing comes on quickly. Expect the water usable from around early April until roughly late November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Expect Hale Lake to follow that timing.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. If the gate is shut, Camacho Lake at 1.7 km is the nearest alternative. Confirm before you fish Hale Lake.
