A crisp, open sky after dark, with next to no ripple with a settled glass. Most of the action on Greasetrail Lake should come off structure within a cast of the bank. If you pick one session, make it the evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Greasetrail Lake is a Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine water, in British Columbia. Land around it is lake country bush. The water covers some 69 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. You are looking at roughly 5.5 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. Smithers sits 123 km from the bank. Further out sit Terrace (125 km) and Telkwa (135 km). No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine cover pink salmon, Chum salmon and Coho salmon. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Greasetrail Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Between January at about -8°C and July at about 13°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Averages place the thaw at mid April and the freeze at mid November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Greasetrail Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Hilltop Lake sits 2.6 km off and takes the overflow. Confirm before you fish Greasetrail Lake.
