Patchy cloud over the water after dark, with a gentle ripple from the S with the glass holding level. Expect most activity at Grayling Lake around windblown banks where food collects. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Grayling Lake lies in Stikine Region, in British Columbia. The surface lies 698 metres up. Roughly 38 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Around 2.9 km of margin, front to back. On size it sits at the modest end of our Stikine Region list. Start from Skagway, 93 km down the road. Haines follows at 111 km, then Whitehorse at 126 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Our records hold no depth for this water. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Stikine Region cover Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon, Coho salmon, mountain whitefish and Arctic grayling. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. The shape of Grayling Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
In an average year July sits at 12°C and January at -15°C. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. On average, early May opens the water and early November closes it again. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Anyone fishing Grayling Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Should this one be busy, Cliff Lake is 1.4 km off. Nothing here settles the position at Grayling Lake for certain.
