Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a gentle ripple from the NNW with the glass holding level. Fish at Gray Lake should hold close to the shaded margin through bright spells. Block out the hours from the day. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Gray Lake is a Strathcona Regional District water, British Columbia side. What surrounds it is farm and woodlot. Around 59 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Around 5.8 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. Campbell River lies 26 km from the water. After that come Oyster River at 39 km and Gold River at 45 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Strathcona Regional District records list sockeye salmon, Chum salmon, pink salmon and Coho salmon among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Gray Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
August is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 16°C, while January sits near 1°C. Spring and autumn are the strongest, but nothing is truly closed. Cover comes and goes, so treat it with suspicion rather than trust. March through May is the strongest run, with October and November a second stretch. On Gray Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A campsite lies 150 m away for anyone staying over. Somewhere to sit and eat is 120 m out. There are toilets 120 m off. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. The nearest alternative is Whymper Lake, 1.9 km out. Check the position at Gray Lake before loading the car.
