Overcast skies today, with a gentle ripple from the WSW with a settled glass. Grant Lake should fish best around any hard bottom among the soft today. The forecast backs the stretch from the day. Settle in and let the day develop. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Grant Lake lies in Northern Rockies Regional Municipality, in British Columbia. Elevation runs to 742 metres. At some 1.53 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Watson Lake at 128 km is the nearest place to stop. Beyond it, Fort Nelson at 241 km and Fort Simpson at 390 km. Also worth knowing: Fishing Lake at 5.5 km, Niloil Lake 18 km off, Long Mountain Lake at 24 km, Lapie Lake 32 km off and Skeezer Lake at 38 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Northern Rockies Regional Municipality cover longnose sucker, mountain whitefish, lake whitefish and northern pike. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The shape of Grant Lake decides where the fish sit.
Average temperature peaks around 14°C in July and bottoms out near -21°C in January. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near early November: that is the shape of an average year. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Grant Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Fishing Lake at 5.5 km is the sensible second choice. Rules at Grant Lake are worth checking on the day.
