Wet weather working through today, with barely a breath of wind and the barometer holding steady. Activity on Francis Lake should centre on structure within a cast of the bank. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies.

Francis Lake is one of the Regional District of Alberni-Clayoquot listings for British Columbia. The surface lies 222 metres up. It measures about 42 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The bank runs about 3.9 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Head to Port Alberni, 33 km away, for anything you forgot. Then Youbou, 38 km, and Coombs, 44 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Regional District of Alberni-Clayoquot include Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon and Chum salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. The near bank of Francis Lake is often the one people ignore.
Temperature averages peak at 14°C in August and bottom out at 1°C in December. The freeze here is occasional rather than annual. In a normal year the cover is thin and short-lived. April and May are the settled weeks, with October close behind. The season on Francis Lake rarely departs from it.
We hold no note on access for this one. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Darlington Lake at 1.8 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Francis Lake before loading the car.
