Set in Regional District of Central Kootenay, Fawn Lake is a British Columbia water. It sits at 2,024 metres above sea level. About 5 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. By elevation it is in the upper part of our British Columbia listings. The town to know is Nakusp, 40 km out. Revelstoke follows at 55 km, then Big Eddy at 55 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Regional District of Central Kootenay: rainbow trout, sockeye salmon, mountain whitefish, largescale sucker and cutthroat trout. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Anyone new to Fawn Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Averages move between -10°C in December and 11°C in August. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Ice is part of the season here, ending near mid May. On average, mid May opens the water and early November closes it again. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. That shapes the year on Fawn Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Peters Lake, 2.2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Fawn Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
