Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with hardly a ripple anywhere and no real change in pressure. Expect most activity at Expansion Lake around points where shallow meets deep. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Expansion Lake lies in Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, in British Columbia. Height above sea level is 868 metres. Surface area is around 17 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The whole outline is near 3.8 km, and most of it is walkable. On size it sits at the modest end of our Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako list. For supplies, Vanderhoof is 56 km out. Kamloops is the closest city, 408 km away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth figures are not published for this one. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name sockeye salmon, Coho salmon and Chinook salmon. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The near bank of Expansion Lake is often the one people ignore.
Typical July readings run about 14°C; by January the average is down near -12°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near mid November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Expansion Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Inez Lake, 4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Expansion Lake for certain.
