Solid cloud cover today, with a firm NE blow with the barometer flat. The productive water at Elizabeth Lake will be around the first drop-off and weed lines. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. The cold puts a premium on the calmest, deepest water.

Elizabeth Lake stands in Regional District of East Kootenay, British Columbia. Height above sea level is 2,262 metres. It covers about 4 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. It is a small entry by Regional District of East Kootenay standards. For supplies, Canmore is 28 km out. Banff lies 29 km off, Radium Hot Springs another 44 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
We hold no depth figure for this one. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Reported across Regional District of East Kootenay: rainbow trout, mountain whitefish and sockeye salmon. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Elizabeth Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Climate normals give 9°C for August and -14°C for January. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early June. Averages suggest open water from about early June through to roughly late October. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. On Elizabeth Lake that shapes the whole year.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Cerulean Lake at 1 km is the sensible second choice. Rules at Elizabeth Lake are worth checking on the day.
