Hard light and clear air over the water, with dead-still conditions and the barometer holding steady. Give the first drop-off and weed lines the first hour at Duckwing Lake. Bank on the evening and treat the rest as bonus. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Duckwing Lake is a Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine water, British Columbia side. The land about it is pine and birch. Roughly 46 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. About 2.9 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Smithers sits 27 km from the bank. The nearest city of size is Kamloops, 672 km away. No border sits close enough to matter.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine records list pink salmon, Chum salmon and Coho salmon among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. At Duckwing Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Temperature averages peak at 15°C in July and bottom out at -8°C in January. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. After early April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Open water usually runs from early April until about late November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. At Duckwing Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. The nearest alternative is Duckbill Lake, 0.8 km out. What applies at Duckwing Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
