Solid cloud cover today, with next to no ripple and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Deer Lake is inflow corners and shaded margins. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

In British Columbia, Deer Lake falls inside Regional District of East Kootenay. The surface lies 785 metres up. At roughly 3 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. On size it sits at the modest end of our Regional District of East Kootenay list. Fernie lies 27 km from the water. Cranbrook follows at 44 km, then Eureka at 47 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, sockeye salmon, bull trout and longnose sucker. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Read Deer Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
August runs about 18°C on average, January about -7°C. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late March. Open water usually runs from late March until about early December. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Deer Lake follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Suzanne Lake sits 3.9 km off and takes the overflow. The position on Deer Lake is worth confirming on the day.
