A clear night sky over the water, with calm air over the water with a settled glass. Activity on Crooked Lake should centre on windblown banks where food collects. The day fishes best from morning through afternoon. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Crooked Lake sits within Northern Rockies Regional Municipality in British Columbia. The setting is northern bush on every side. About 1.17 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. With 12 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Watson Lake is the closest place, 128 km off. Edmonton sits 1058 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Northern Rockies Regional Municipality records list longnose sucker, mountain whitefish, lake whitefish, northern pike and Arctic cisco among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. The near bank of Crooked Lake is often the one people ignore.
Expect July near 15°C and January near -23°C on the long-run figures. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about early November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. On Crooked Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Failing this one, try West Lake, 5.5 km away. Ask locally about Crooked Lake if anything is unclear.
