A closed sky with even light today, with light air out of the SSE and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Cook Lake is the weed line and any gaps in it. A tough forecast; the evening offers the only real chance. Save the long walk for a better forecast. A raw day: short sessions and precise casts pay.

Cook Lake is set in Stikine Region, British Columbia. The ground around here is mixed forest. Around 24 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The whole outline is near 3.3 km, and most of it is walkable. On size it sits at the modest end of our Stikine Region list. Watson Lake lies 113 km from the water. For a city, Kamloops is 1121 km off. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Fish documented in Stikine Region include Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon, Coho salmon and mountain whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Cook Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Averages move between -15°C in January and 11°C in July. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late May. Averages suggest open water from about late May through to roughly late October. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. That is the shape of the year on Cook Lake.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. For a change of water, Simmons Lake is 1.5 km distant. Check the position at Cook Lake before loading the car.
