Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with a kind NNE breeze on the water and pressure sitting still. Give the first drop-off and weed lines the first hour at Boreal Lake. The forecast is against you; the middle of the day is the least bad option. Short, focused sessions beat a long grind today.

Set in Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, Boreal Lake is a British Columbia water. It stands 942 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 86 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. A shoreline of some 4.8 km keeps the choices simple. Start from Watson Lake, 152 km down the road. Fort Nelson is 286 km away, with Wrangell at 382 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Species logged across Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine include pink salmon, Chum salmon, Coho salmon and sockeye salmon. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Boreal Lake that means starting tight and working out.
The warmest month averages 12°C, the coldest about -18°C. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. Ice is part of the season here, ending near mid May. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid May in spring and again near late October in autumn. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. On Boreal Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. The nearest alternative is Dall Lake, 23 km out. Check the position at Boreal Lake before loading the car.
