Flat light and a covered sky today, with a gentle ripple from the E with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Bird Lake should come off reed fringes and open pockets. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies.

Bird Lake lies in Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, British Columbia. Mixed forest runs right down to the water. The water covers around 3.14 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. The perimeter runs near 17 km, so plan the walk before you start. It is among the larger waters listed here for Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako. Burns Lake lies 75 km from the water. After that come Vanderhoof at 87 km and Fort St. James at 108 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name sockeye salmon, Coho salmon, Chinook salmon, pink salmon and Chum salmon. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Read Bird Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Long-run averages give July about 13°C and January about -11°C. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about mid November in an average year. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Bird Lake rarely departs from it.
We hold no note on access for this one. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Mackenzie Lake, 9.2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. The position on Bird Lake is worth confirming on the day.
